E-Textbooks

LIBRARY LINK OF THE DAY:

I chose an article from the Library Link of the day which is a daily link for library profession. This article deals with e-textbooks being available for college students, yet this strategy has been unsuccessful due to saving college book expenses. Her is some of what this article had to say:

School of thought: Why aren't e-textbooks selling?
Digital textbooks can save college students hundred of dollars every semester, but the market is off to an unimpressive start.
By Bridget Carey
Tell college student they can save 50 percent on a textbook, and you've got their full attention. For that matter, you have their parents' full attention, too. It's been a year since most U.S. campus bookstores began offering downloadable versions of some textbooks, ranging between 40 percent and 50 percent less than the cost of the tangible version. But as the spring semester kicks off Florida college campuses, these cheaper e-books are not flying off the cyber shelves. Industry insiders point to several reasons: lack of knowledge, poor marketing and few choices.

I thought this was a very interesting article, because I would love to save money on my college textbooks, I can honestly say that I have spent thousands of dollars on textbooks during the course of pursing a degree. This article also interested me, because the library I'm employed with is considering purchasing e-talking books which are downloadable stories/books for patrons to check-out. Although, this is different from college e-textbooks, I believe this is a wonderful idea and I look forward to/and hope this transformation will eventually progress.
