Library Garden:
Here is another article that I read in Library Garden that I found to be very interesting and coincidentally is a very popular novel that circulates often at the Jeffersonville Public Library. I also recommend this read for anyone interested in Graphic Novels/Young Adult literature.
In Library Garden there is an article about the book titled “American Born Chinese” by Gene Yang, winning the Michael L. Printz Award. The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in Young Adult literature. The award is sponsored by Booklist, which is a publication of the American Library Association.
American Born Chinese consists of three different stories: The first storyline deals with the traditional Chinese tale of the Monkey King and his quest to become a God above all others. The second storyline deals with a Taiwanese-American child raised one of San Francisco’s predominately Chinese neighborhoods and then moving with his family to the suburbs. There he tries to fit in at his new elementary school, and goes through the usual torment of being a new student, such as bullying, teasing, and simply feeling out of place. The third storyline deals with an American high-school boy whose life takes a drastic turn when his Chinese cousin comes to visit.
Although this is just a little synopsis of what the book is about, each storyline has something to say about being different and coming to terms with one’s identity, and innocent children who struggle with trying to fit in.
